In the last couple months I have been involved with a non-profit organization called Tetra Society. Tetra Society is a group of skilled volunteers who are dedicated to create customized assistive devices for people with physical disabilities.
My first project with them was to help a young quadriplegic woman with muscular dystrophy to find a way to mount her iPad to a wall so that can could use it at eye level. After meeting her in person we determined the needs and requirements for this project.
She was looking for a way to use her iPad without causing strain on her neck since she could not easily look down at the iPad even if it was on a stand on a table or desk. Ideally she wanted it on her wall at eye level where she could use her remote to interact with it. However there were not many commercial solutions that fit her needs or were far to expensive. To get an idea of what she wanted I researched several commercial solutions and ask for her feedback on what features she needed or liked most.
In the end we determined her needs were very simple and the solution I chose was based on this 3D printed wall stand. Not only does it have a sturdy stand, but also a cam-lock mechanism to keep it from falling or leaning out.
I made a few changes in the design, modifying the STL file in Blender3D I added a hole in the bottom of the stand for the charging cable and after it was printed I glued felt to protect the device since she had no case on it.
The cam lock assembly is pretty straight forward. The design was very simple, elegant almost. It was very easy for me to print and the finish on it was very smooth.

Installation took just minutes and my client was very happy with the result. The total cost of this project was less than $20.
